Summary
Backend engineer building Python services for parcel operations. Experience with PostgreSQL, partner integrations, and production incident response. Turns operational problems into APIs and tools that support teams can use.
Experience
Software Engineer · Bracken Parcel Software Ltd
May 2023–Present · Manchester, UK
- Built a Python intake service for shipment updates from six carriers, validating partner payloads and routing rejected events to a support dashboard.
- Replaced repeated database lookups with a batched PostgreSQL query, reducing the shipment-history endpoint's p95 response time from 1.2 seconds to 430 milliseconds during the same peak-hour traffic window.
- Added idempotency keys and replay tests to the carrier webhook handler so retried delivery events no longer created duplicate shipment records.
- Wrote incident runbooks and trained the support team to replay rejected updates through an audited tool instead of requesting manual database edits.
Junior Software Engineer · Alder Service Tools Ltd
July 2021–April 2023 · Leeds, UK
- Implemented CSV import validation for an inventory application, returning row-level error messages that let operations staff correct a file before import.
- Added integration tests for order cancellation and stock restoration, including concurrent requests and partial failures.
Skills
Python, SQL, PostgreSQL, HTTP APIs, pytest, Git, Linux. Production work: asynchronous event handling, query investigation, integration testing, and incident response.
Education
BSc Computer Science · Westmere University · 2021
Why each experience bullet is here
1. The service and its users
The carrier intake bullet gives the reader an object to picture. “Six carriers” describes the integration surface; it does not pretend that a count of APIs is a business result. Payload validation and a support dashboard show what the engineer actually built.
2. A result with a measurement boundary
The latency bullet names the endpoint, the percentile, the starting value, and the ending value. The traffic window makes the comparison more meaningful. In your version, be ready to explain the dashboard or experiment behind the numbers and what else changed during that period.
3. A correctness improvement
The retry bullet describes an observable failure and the mechanism used to prevent it. It does not need a fictional revenue figure. If the fix was only verified in tests, say that; do not silently turn a test result into a production outcome.
4. An operational change
The replay tool demonstrates collaboration and a changed workflow. “Trained the support team” is specific enough to discuss. It is more useful than an unsupported claim about “excellent communication.”

Make this structure fit your experience
Start with the role you want. For a backend opening focused on APIs, lead with integration and data work. For a reliability role, move incident response, safe changes, and recovery work earlier. Keep the underlying facts identical.
- Early career: use a project or internship if it gives better evidence than unrelated employment. Explain your part, the implementation, and how you checked it. Label a personal project as a project.
- Experienced engineer: make service ownership and technical decisions explicit. Separate a team's outcome from your contribution.
- Senior engineer: add the scope of a decision: which teams depended on it, what alternatives you considered, and how you helped others deliver. “Senior” in a heading cannot supply that evidence.
Keep a longer private inventory of your work, then select relevant examples for each application. The resume tailoring walkthrough shows how to map evidence to a job posting.
Check the document you will actually send
The layout above is a web example. Your application document needs its own review. Follow the employer's file instructions and make sure the exported file has readable text and a sensible reading order.
- Use clear section names such as Experience, Skills, Projects, and Education.
- Keep important contact details in the document body.
- Copy the exported document's text into a plain-text editor and inspect the order. This is a basic check, not a guarantee of parser behavior.
- Check links, dates, spelling, and any fields the application form fills from your file.
Greenhouse documents parsing problems with column layouts, graphics, and complex tables, headers, or footers. Its guidance concerns its own parser; no template guarantees an interview or acceptance by every hiring system.
Questions about backend engineer resumes
Should I list every technology I have used?
Prioritize technologies relevant to the role that you can discuss confidently. Put central skills in the experience that demonstrates them. A long list of unrelated tools makes that evidence harder to find.
What if I cannot disclose production numbers?
Use information you are allowed to share: the type of system, your responsibility, the technical change, and a qualitative outcome. Do not expose confidential dashboards or replace restricted numbers with made-up ones.
Do I need a summary?
Use one if it clarifies your specialty or a career transition. If it only repeats your job title and skills list, spend the space on an experience or project that adds evidence.
